Giving up a son with autism

Amanda and Philip Telford recently gave up their 19 yrs. old son with autism to the province. They made this incredibly difficult decision because the couple could no longer give him the care he needed. Along with autism their son, Phillip, has tourette's syndrome, diabetes and functions at a level of a two year old. He is also a full grown 19 year old so it is difficult to help him with the basic care with someone who functions at a level of a two year old. Amanda Telford is a social worker, so she did everything in her power to give him the best care but it was still not enough. Phillip was sent to the Ottawa office of Development Services Ontario where the office is responsible for connecting adults with disabilities with support services.

This connects to law 12 because we have learned about child custody in marriage and law.

How I See It...

This is such a sad story. It must be horrible to give your child up but i think the parents did the right thing because they realized they can't give the child the care he needs and deserves.

  1. I can't believe they would give up their own child... I think that although the child has a disability, he should still be cared for.

  2. It is so sad to see a family struggle through this to the point where they give up, but I believe they may come to regret this decision.

  3. This story is very sad, people who give up on their own child are horrible. Especially when ones child has disabilities, he or she should at least be taken to a better place. Great post!

  4. This is very saddening that the family had to succumb to giving their child to the government. I can't even begin to imagine how the child must have felt.
